On Sunday, June 21, 2026, a male passenger in his 70s bit a fellow flyer and became aggressive aboard American Airlines Flight AA3046 after suffering a medical emergency. The flight was travelling from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), North Carolina, to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Pennsylvania.

What Happened?

According to the pilot, a passenger bit another flyer as the plane neared PHL. As the Airbus A320 approached Philadelphia International Airport, the pilot contacted air traffic control to request immediate assistance from emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and law enforcement.

In the audio recording of the transmission, the pilot stated:

“I don’t know… if he’s hallucinating or whatever, but he just bit a passenger and he’s trying to fight everybody.”
The passenger reportedly suffered a medical emergency. Following this medical episode, the man became highly disoriented and combative and began throwing punches. In the ensuing chaos, he bit another traveller sitting nearby.

The Medical Emergency

Following the incident, American Airlines released a statement clarifying that the disruptive behaviour stemmed from a severe medical emergency. Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) data from the flight deck indicated the man had suffered a seizure before the outburst.

A medical professional who happened to be travelling as a passenger on the flight stepped in to treat and assist the man. The aircraft landed safely just before 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time, where medical teams met the passenger at the gate, and paramedics immediately boarded the plane upon arrival to take over the man’s care.

The airline has come forward and announced that, due to this incident being a medical emergency, it was an involuntary neurological response rather than intentional malice from the passenger.
