British Airways (BA) is seeking £10 million compensation over disruptions at London Heathrow International Airport’s (LHR) baggage system. Last weekend, May 15, 16, and 17, 2026, over 20,000 pieces of luggage were lost.

British Airways Claims
During the third weekend of May, 2026, London Heathrow’s baggage system saw a massive failure, losing over 20,000 pieces of luggage. Several airlines, including British Airways, were significantly disrupted. Due to the chaos, the carrier is seeking £10 million in compensation for the disruption.
In a letter to Heathrow’s CEO, Thomas Woldbye, BA’s Chief Executive Sean Doyle has called the impact the event had on passengers “significant and unacceptable”. Throughout the whole of 2026, this instance has not been the only challenge for BA at Heathrow; 4,000 luggage were lost during Easter, and overall 7,000 bags up to half-term.
The luggage system failure led to different disruptions within the airport. Passenger’s holidays were ruined, flights were significantly delayed, and business trips were held up. This influenced flyers’ trust on BA’s services, even though the carrier had no control over the situation.

London Heathrow’s Response
The airport has been facing a lot of backlash due to the chaos. BA was not the only carrier that expressed discontentment with the situation. Virgin Airways, one of the airport’s most important clients, has called for changes, saying that this isn’t the first time the baggage system has caused mayhem.
Heathrow has come forward regarding the event. A representative of the airport has said:
“really sorry for the inconvenience and frustration caused by the baggage incident last Friday.”
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) proposed a new regulatory model, which may force the airport to open its new runway. Following the events, airlines and passengers have been assured by the airport that it is actively working on improving the luggage system so no other massive failures may occur.
It is unknown yet what has caused the system failure, however, the airport is working towards improvement.
