London Stansted Airport (STN) is preparing for a sharp rise in passenger traffic over the Easter holiday period, with around 1.5 million passengers expected to pass through the terminal in the coming weeks. Airport officials said that between March 28 and April 12, approximately 760,000 passengers will depart from STN, with a further 740,000 arrivals scheduled.

Peak Holiday Demand Builds

The Easter getaway is set to drive strong demand for short-haul leisure routes. Popular destinations include Spain, Italy and Portugal, alongside city breaks to Rome, Barcelona, Dublin and Budapest.

Over the Easter weekend alone, passenger numbers are forecast to exceed 400,000, with Good Friday expected to be the busiest day for outbound travel.

Airlines operating from STN have added capacity on key European routes to meet the seasonal surge, reflecting continued recovery in leisure travel demand.

Security Upgrades Fully Operational

This Easter marks the first peak period with STN’s expanded security hall fully in use. The facility includes next-generation scanners, allowing passengers to keep liquids and large electronic devices in their hand luggage during screening.

Further enhancements are planned, including additional boarding card scanners at the new security entrance, which remains under development.

The changes form part of the airport’s broader terminal upgrade programme aimed at improving passenger flow during high-demand periods.

Ongoing Terminal Improvements

Several infrastructure projects have already been completed, including a new domestic arrivals building, upgrades to the Satellite Two gate area, and improvements to the airport’s baggage handling system.

Passengers travelling via Satellite One will also have access to the recently opened Essence Lounge, replacing the former Escape Lounge.

Chief operating officer Jonathan Fowler said teams across the airport are preparing for increased demand and working to maintain smooth operations throughout the holiday period.
