Etihad Airways has unveiled one of its most ambitious fleet expansions in recent years, placing a firm order for six Airbus A330-900neos and significantly boosting its A350 widebody portfolio. The announcement, made at the Dubai Airshow, marks a major step in Etihad’s strategy to operate one of the world’s most modern, fuel-efficient widebody fleets.

A Modern, Fuel-Efficient Fleet Strategy Takes Shape

The airline will now join the growing family of A330neo customers, while simultaneously increasing its commitment to the A350 programme with seven additional A350-1000s—bringing its total order for the type to 27 aircraft. Etihad has also firmed up an order for three A350F freighters, raising its total A350F commitment to 10 units, strengthening the competitiveness of Etihad Cargo in a rapidly expanding global freight market.

Adding to its commitments, Etihad also revealed a new lease agreement for nine A330-900s from aircraft lessor Avolon, further accelerating its medium-haul and regional expansion plans.

A Strategic Boost Across Passenger and Cargo Networks

Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves described the multi-aircraft deal as a cornerstone of the airline’s growth strategy:

These aircraft strengthen our operations across medium-haul, long-haul, and cargo. The A330neo brings the right combination of efficiency and flexibility for our regional and mid-range growth, while the A350-1000 continues to deliver exceptional performance on our long-haul network. The A350F freighter adds significant capability to our cargo division as global demand continues to expand. Our partnership with Airbus continues to play an important role in shaping our future fleet, and we are proud to be building one of the world’s most modern and efficient widebody operations.”

The announcement also drew praise from Airbus leadership. Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales, highlighted the strategic alignment between the manufacturer and the Abu Dhabi-based carrier:

“Etihad Airways’ continued investment in our latest generation widebody aircraft is a testament to the strength of our partnership and the shared vision we have for the future of aviation in the UAE and beyond. The combination of the A350 Family and A330neo will deliver unmatched efficiency and flexibility to Etihad’s operations, supporting its future development.”

A Competitive Edge in Global Aviation

The addition of the A350F positions Etihad as a competitive force in the global air cargo market—one that has seen sustained growth post-pandemic. With its advanced payload capabilities and reduced operating costs, the A350F is expected to become a key asset in Etihad’s cargo strategy.

Meanwhile, the A330neo offers flexibility for regional and mid-range routes while providing significant fuel savings, making it an attractive choice as the airline continues to rebuild and expand its network.
