Uganda Airlines is seeking to secure a short-term wet lease after grounding its two long-haul aircraft. This has led to disruption to the Airline’s services to London Gatwick and Mumbai International.

Affected routes

Uganda Airlines’ long-haul fleet includes two A330-800N:  5X-CRN (msn 1979) and 5X-NIL (msn 1977). The 5X-CRN has been grounded since January 11. Meanwhile, 5X-NIL was grounded at Gatwick on February 20.

This grounding of the aircraft has impacted flights to Dubai International and Abuja.

The airline said, ” ‎Uganda Airlines wishes to inform our esteemed guests that two of our long-haul aircraft are temporarily out of service due to unscheduled maintenance. We understand that this may cause concern and inconvenience, and we want to assure all affected passengers that their safety and comfort remain our highest priority.”

According to ch-aviation, the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has appointed 81-year-old Girma Wake as adviser and acting CEO after the dismissal of Jenifer Bamuturaki.

Additionally, Wake is a former CEO and chairman of Ethiopian Airlines and former chairman of RwandAir.

Amidst this, the airline will re-accommodate its affected passengers on alternative airlines or rebook them on future flights.

They also stated, “We are working around the clock to source the required components and technical expertise to return these aircraft to service.”
