Southwest Airlines expects B737 MAX 7s for late 2026. The airline has showed optimism for its arrival, and they remain hopeful that the aircraft will begin flying in early 2027.
Southwest Airlines and B737
Southwest Airlines is widely known as the most affordable U.S. airline. Currently, the carrier has the greatest B737 fleet across the globe, and their oldest operating aircraft is nearly 25 years old. Approximately, Southwest’s fleet size is between 803 and 816 aircraft.
Through operating strictly with the B737s, they have numerous strategic advantages. By solely using B737s, the carrier has establish a crucial partnership for both side with Boeing. The company is able to save money training their crew, general maintenance, and infrastructure issues.
In spite of having the greatest B737 fleet, it would be important for the airline to modernise. Several of the aircraft are older than 15 years, whereas the MAX 7s are newer and more technological. It would be beneficial to employ those aircraft.
Arrival and Debut of B737 MAX 7
The carrier’s goal is to replace the outdated B737-700s with the modern MAX 7s. Boeing planned to deliver the MAX 7s to customers by 2019. However, the delivery was rescheduled to 2022 after the launch of the MAX 8 and MAX 9. The delivery was not successful due to regulatory challenges.
Fleet asset management director, Ken Barone has recently said:
“We’re being told, later this year they will get regulatory approval.”
Further, Barone then clarified that, if granted the approval in mid 2026, the airline is confident that the debut of the MAX 7 will happen early next year.
Additionally, the airline is confident on the timeframe. Southwest’s CEO, Bob Jordan, is optimistic that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will grant the necessary certification to the aircraft, which will lead to a smooth transition from the B737-700s to the MAX 7.
