The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched its new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) platform, linking airlines and suppliers with ease. This development aims to improve SAF efficiency, connectivity, and visibility – coming a few months after IATA created the SAF Registry to record and organise fuel transactions.

IATA’s SAF Matchmaker Platform

IATA has announced the release of their SAF Matchmaker platform that matches requests made by airlines for SAF supply with offers. When there is a match, airlines and suppliers connect and can negotiate their terms, such as price and payment.

The SAF Matchmaker targets the key issues of efficiency, connectivity, and visibility. Procurement of SAF is made easier and faster, with the simplified connection of airlines and suppliers. Additionally, the platform shows available SAF information – including volumes, feedstock used, production location, production technology, and emissions reductions.

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Economist, has highlighted the significance of the SAF Matchmaker in a statement:

“To reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, we need an accessible, transparent, liquid, and efficient SAF market. The SAF Matchmaker is another example of the work that IATA is putting in place to create a fully functioning market for SAF. The SAF Matchmaker platform will accelerate the uptake of SAF by reducing the costs and complexity that airlines face when searching for SAF suppliers.”

How to Access the SAF Matchmaker

The SAF Matchmaker is hosted on IATA’s Aviation Energy Hub, which provides the aviation industry with access to tools that help to support aviation energy management. The Aviation Energy Hub is also home to the Supplier Directory – a comprehensive, airport-level database of suppliers of Conventional Aviation Fuel (CAF) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The SAF Matchmaker is available to airlines and SAF suppliers. Though IATA aims to later open to other SAF buyers, such as non-aviation corporations.

What are your thoughts on IATA’s new SAF Matchmaker platform? How do you think this will impact the use of sustainable aviation fuel and reduce carbon emissions? Let us know.
