Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Vietnam Airlines have announced a new codeshare agreement, set to commence in early July. This partnership aims to streamline travel between Scandinavia and Vietnam, offering passengers more flexible itineraries and the ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles across both airlines’ networks.

What the Codeshare Means for Passengers

The codeshare agreement will allow passengers to book seamless itineraries that include flights operated by either SAS or Vietnam Airlines. This development is particularly beneficial for travelers journeying between the Scandinavian capitals—Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo—and major Vietnamese cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. By consolidating bookings into a single reservation, the partnership simplifies travel planning and enhances overall convenience.

The collaboration leverages the airlines’ shared membership in the SkyTeam alliance, offering passengers the ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles through SAS EuroBonus and Vietnam Airlines’ LotusMiles programs. This move underscores the airlines’ commitment to providing enhanced travel options and benefits to their customers.

Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership:

This agreement is a testament to the value of the SkyTeam alliance in delivering global connectivity and shared benefits for frequent flyers. It also opens up exciting opportunities for our passengers to experience Vietnam’s vibrant culture, natural beauty, and exceptional cuisine.”

Promoting Cultural and Economic Ties

The codeshare collaboration marks a step forward in linking two regions with strong cultural and economic ties and supports broader ambitions for increased tourism and business travel.

Dang Anh Tuan, Executive Vice President of Vietnam Airlines says:

As both airlines are members of the SkyTeam alliance, this provides a solid foundation for implementing an effective codeshare agreement, offering passengers more destination choices and enhanced benefits for members of each airlines frequent flyer program. At the same time, this partnership marks an important step forward in promoting economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between Vietnam and the Scandinavian region.”

The announcement was made during the Vietnam–Sweden Business Forum, coinciding with the official visit of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Sweden. The presence of Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Benjamin Dousa, underscored the significance of the partnership in promoting economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between Vietnam and the Scandinavian region.

Ticket sales for the new codeshare flights are expected to commence in early July 2025. As both airlines continue to enhance their networks, travelers can anticipate more flexible and efficient connections between Southeast Asia and Scandinavia, fostering greater cultural exchange and economic collaboration.
