Having a total flight duration of 60 hours, TUI Airways Flight BY2536 began its journey on a Friday morning in Manchester and arrived in Madeira last Sunday evening (14th January 2024). The aircraft’s weekend track drew a lot of interest and observation.
TUI arrives at Madeira (FNC) after 60 hours.
TUI Airways usually operates weekly twice to Madeira Funchal Airport (FNC) from Manchester (MAN) and London Gatwick (LGW). The incident aircraft was scheduled to fly from Manchester International Airport (MAN) at 08:48 (local time) Friday early morning and arrive at Madeira Funchal Airport (FNC) at noon, covering around 3hrs 59mins of flight time.
As per the schedule, the aircraft was airborne and started cruise towards Madeira. As we all know Madeira Airport, is one of the most challenging airports to land, mainly because of the weather conditions. After BY2536 reached the Madiera radar, the aircraft couldn’t land due to the bad weather that day and diverted to Porto Santo airport (PXO). After spending overnight, the next day the aircraft took the skies and attempted to land at Madeira, unfortunately, they had to divert to Tenerife South Airport (TFS).
After several hours at Tenerife South, the aircraft continued its flight to Madeira airport. Once more, bad weather prevented the BY2536 from landing, and this time they had to wait three hours in a holding pattern to be able to reroute to the Tenerife South.
BY2536 finally touched down at Madeira Funchal Airport (FNC) on Sunday, the following day, at 21:26 local time. The aircraft involved was a 10-year-old Boeing 737-800 with registration (G-TAWM), with 189 all economy class seats.
Madeira Funchal airport (FNC)
Madeira Airport is one of the most difficult airports in the world. Airlines operating in Madeira should give their crew additional training and only the captain should land at the airport. The weather at the airport is volatile and unexpected, especially in terms of wind direction, which makes the approach more difficult.
