Wizz Air to open Spanish bases in 4Q27

Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) will expand its bases to Spain, specifically at Madrid Barajas and Valencia Manises. Launching its first domestic routes in the country starting in late October 2026.

Wizz Air announces expansion into Spain

The low cost carrier (LCC) will be bringing its two A321-200X aircraft to each of the airports. Its domestic networks will comprise services from:

From Valencia Mansies (VLC): Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Bilbao (BIO), Asturias (OVD), Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), and Santander (SDR).
From Madrid (MAD): Palma de Mallorca, Asturias, and Santiago de Compostela.
Point-to-Point Links: Bilbao to Málaga and Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela.

The entire network of Wizz Air is currently gearing towards international flying, except its domestic network in Italy. The LCC also operates a domestic route in Slovakia. Connecting Bratislava (BTS) and Kosice (KSC). The expansion into Spain comes after its rival LCC, Ryanair, started operations in the country.

Wizz Air keeping up with competition in European markets

This was a catalyst caused by the constant backlash rival airport operator, Aena, faced for its high fees. Wizz Air continues to try and expand its growth to key European markets already dominated by other LCC’s. The airline currently accounts for around 3.5% of Spain’s scheduled flights, which is compared with Ryanair’s 19.8% stake.

By Wizz Air opening Madrid and Valencia, the airline hopes to position itself as competitive in Spain whilst also increasing its networks for both domestic and international travellers. The European market is already dominated by key low cost aviation players such as Ryanair and easyJet. Spain will become the second country where Wizz Air operates following Italy.
