Hong Kong and Singapore are very popular tourist destinations in Asia, but they both have only one airport each. Despite having only one airport, both countries are still extremely busy aviation hubs, ranking as the 9th and 10th busiest airports in Asia respectively. According to RadarBox, the average daily movements in each airport are 1043 for Hong Kong and 1017 for Singapore. Both airports are reliable and safe, but what is it that makes these airports so popular and busy?

Singapore Airport (Changi Airport)

Changi Airport in Singapore is considered one of the most modern and futuristic airports in the world. It has an indoor waterfall, a shopping mall with a rain vortex, an indoor rainforest and even a hedge maze inside. The airport is also mostly automatised, using robotic housekeeping to keep it clean, self-service kiosks and automated boarding systems. All the greenery and modern technology make Changi Airport sustainable and climate-friendly. The airport is also constantly expanding, with plans for a fifth terminal and runways to be made over the sea.

There are many reasons why Changi Airport is one of the busiest airports in Asia and the world. It is strategically located along the world’s major trade, shipping and aviation routes, making it perfect for layovers on long-haul flights. It is also home to the FedEx Express cargo hub, making it ideal for cargo transfers. The modern infrastructure of the airport makes it easier to handle larger numbers of passengers. It also has a reputation for providing high-quality service and passenger experiences, and it dominates the world of business travel. The airport is also well-known for its efficiency and customer support services, making it one of the best airports in the world.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)

Hong Kong International Airport was designed in 1998 to be as modern and futuristic as possible. It was constructed using natural lighting and glass windows built to break in the event of a typhoon. The windows were designed in this manner to relieve the pressure within the airport during a storm. It also has one of the largest airport terminals in the world. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Hong Kong Airport’s passenger terminal building is the largest in the world at 1.3 kilometres in length and 550,000 meters wide. The airport also provides a modern, hassle-free passenger experience, with an Automated People Mover System (APM) in place to move passengers around with ease.

Hong Kong International Airport is the world’s busiest cargo airport, handling a daily cargo aircraft movement of 176, according to RadarBox. According to the same source, HKIA distributes 14.1% of its aircraft to cargo dealings. In 2023, the airport moved a total of 4.3 million tons of cargo. It is also the 4th busiest airport in the Asia-Pacific region for passenger transport and the 10th busiest globally. Hong Kong International is a major hub for global travel. At least half of all long-haul flights can reach their final destination within 5 hours from Hong Kong International Airport.
