United Airlines announces plans to add “lie-flat” beds in economy class starting in 2027. Air New Zealand first introduced this concept under the name “Skycouch.”

United Airlines’ “Relax Row”
A skycouch is the concept of converting a row of three economy class seats into a lie-flat couch. This concept has been adopted by several airlines, and the United States (U.S.)-based airline is the latest addition with a tweak in the name.
The airline has announced that it is going to name its modified economy class “Relax Row”. It will consist of specially designed leg rests that can be raised to offer a five-foot-long bed.
It will also offer a mattress pad, blankets and pillows to enhance the flying experience of “Relax Row” ticket holders. The “Relax Row” couch can be shared by a couple, a parent and child, or a solo traveller who wants a business class flying experience at a minimal price.
Andrew Nocella, the carrier’s chief commercial officer, said:
“As a leading premium airline, we’re committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers – and the United Relax Row is the perfect example of that.”
United confirms that from 2027 a dozen sets of three seats on Boeing 787 and 777 will be available for passengers to experience “Relax Row”. The airline has not yet revealed pricing.

“Lie-flat” beds in economy class
This concept of converting the economy seats into “lie-flat” was first introduced in 2011, and several airlines, including Lufthansa, have followed this concept with different names.
Earlier, Air New Zealand had named this concept “Economy Skycouch”, but later they changed the name to “Cuddle Class”. Their passengers can pay the standard price for two seats and get the third at half price.
Lufthansa has named this “Sleeper’s Row” and has made this available for solo passengers on journeys of 11 hours or more.
