Two Chinese carriers, China’s Spring Airlines and Juneyao Airlines, have planned a large order for Airbus’ A320 family of jets, which comes to a combined estimated value of $8 billion, stock filings show. Spring Airlines has placed an order of 30 new aircraft, while Juneyao Airlines’ planned order for the Airbus A320-family jets stands at 25.

A Large Order

China’s Spring Airlines already operates an all-Airbus narrowbody fleet, leaning heavily on the A320 platform, and this latest order of 30 A320-family aircraft continues to support the airline’s preferred fleet. With estimations that this order will be delivered in stages between 2028 and 2032, there are also expectations that the A320neo variants will be included, which provide improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Likewise, Juneyao Airlines has placed an order of 25 A320-family jets over a similar delivery window, with the hopes that these additional aircraft will support capacity growth and fleet renewal. Currently, this airline’s fleet utilises a mixture of widebody aircraft for long-haul flights, as well as steadily acquiring narrowbody aircraft, like with this order.

Further Details on the Announcement

Despite the announcement of this large order, this is currently only a plan for both airlines, still subject to government approvals that can be affected by geopolitical and trade considerations. These come during a period of renewed effort by Airbus to expand its footprint in China, which relies heavily on these types of narrowbody aircraft due to the high frequency of short-haul international services across Asia.

Whilst large-scale commitments such as these take slower to materialise, Airbus has already received clearance to deliver around 120 jets earlier this month, and having deliveries scheduled in the late 2020s emphasises long-term passenger demand. Overall, this large order represents a deep commitment between Airbus and these two airlines, deepening relationships with Chinese operators and alluding to future industrial plans.
