Textron Aviation has launched its search for volunteer aircraft owners to support the 2026 Special Olympics Airlift, a large-scale operation that will transport hundreds of athletes and coaches to the Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota. The initiative, which is recognised as the world’s largest peacetime airlift, relies on volunteer pilots, crews, and aircraft operators from across the United States to ensure participants can travel to and from the event free of charge.

Aviation community invited to support athletes

Textron Aviation is calling on owners and operators of eligible Cessna, Beechcraft, and Hawker aircraft to participate in the ninth Special Olympics Airlift. Scheduled for June 19 and June 27, 2026, the operation will bring athletes and coaches from across the country to Minnesota’s Twin Cities for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games.

Volunteer participants donate the use of their aircraft, crew, fuel, and time to support the mission. Since the programme began in 1987, more than 10,000 athletes and coaches have been transported to Special Olympics competitions through the Airlift initiative. During the event, aircraft operating under the callsign “Dove” are expected to arrive and depart every few minutes from St. Paul Downtown Airport, creating one of the most coordinated civilian aviation operations in the United States.

Ron Draper, president and CEO of Textron Aviation, said the programme offers athletes the opportunity to travel to a national competition while creating lasting memories for everyone involved.

Special Olympics USA Games set for Minnesota

The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will take place from June 20 to June 26, 2026, across Minnesota’s Twin Cities. More than 3,000 athletes from all 50 states are expected to compete in 16 Olympic-style sports during the week-long event.

The Airlift plays a crucial role in helping athletes attend the Games, removing transportation barriers and allowing participants to focus on competition and personal achievement. The operation is supported by a range of aviation and community partners, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), airport authorities, and Special Olympics organisations.

Textron Aviation says the event demonstrates the aviation industry’s ability to come together in support of a shared cause, with hundreds of volunteers contributing their expertise and resources to help athletes reach the national stage.

As preparations continue for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, Textron Aviation is once again bringing together the aviation community to support athletes from across the country. Through the dedication of volunteer aircraft owners, pilots, and crews, the Special Olympics Airlift will help ensure participants can travel to Minnesota and experience one of the most significant sporting events of their lives.
