Singapore Airlines (SIA) said it is open to investing more money into Air India. It has ruled out any issues related to its investment in Air India despite the airline’s mounting losses.

Singapore Airlines Sees ‘Tangible Progress’ in Air India

In its July 17 response to questions from the Securities Investors Association (Singapore), SIA said it sees:

“Tangible progress in its [Air India’s] transformation efforts”, adding that “the Board will carefully consider any requests for additional capital from Air India.”

This comes ahead of its annual general meeting scheduled for July 24.

SIA acknowledged Air India’s continued challenges. These include high fuel prices, depreciation of the Indian rupee, supply chain disruptions, closure of Pakistan’s airspace to Indian airlanes, and the 2025 B787-8 crash that killed more than 240 people.

Despite these issues, SIA reassures that Air India has made progress in areas such as customer experience, fleet and network expansion, operational performance, and improvements to its ground and in-flight services.

Singapore Airlines’ Holdings of Air India

SIA holds a 25.1% stake in Air India, following the November 2024 merger of Vistara with Air India. It affirms the merger as a key part of its long-term multi-hub strategy. The merger provides the carrier with India’s domestic market and international traffic flows.

It said its chief executive serves on Air India’s board and is providing aviation expertise to support the transformation programme. It also placed executives in operational, engineering and maintenance roles.

With all the issues that continue to plague Air India’s business and operations, it seems only time will tell if Singapore Airlines’ investment in Air India is truly successful.
