SAS is leading the way in making flying greener

SAS marked its first appearance in The Aviation Challenge this year with a record flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles to mark the airline’s 70th anniversary of being the first to fly over the North Pole.

That milestone—cutting travel time between Europe and North America — remains crucial in efforts today to save fuel and lower emissions.  The SAS flight to Los Angeles in 2024 achieved almost a 20% reduction in CO₂ emissions per passenger.  Underlining that the airline’s strategic route planning and operational efficiencies are on track to reduce aviation’s environmental impact.

SAS Sustainability Awards and Innovation in Aviation

SAS showed full commitment to sustainable innovation, with the airline winning for two major initiatives.

Best Scaled Cargo Solution: SAS won this category for its innovative light board pallet initiative. Designed to reduce weight and significantly cut fuel consumption across cargo operations, contributing to lower CO₂ emissions.

Best Scaled FlightOps Solution: The airline’s Fuel Efficiency Program earned top honors for delivering substantial reductions in CO₂ emissions through enhanced operational strategies.

For instance, SAS also received special recognition from SkyTeam for operating the flight with the lowest CO₂ emissions, reinforcing its leadership in sustainability within the airline industry.

The Aviation Challenge underlines the sustainability efforts of SkyTeam member airlines. This year 33 showcase flights and 327 solutions were reviewed based on CO₂ reduction, waste minimisation, ground handling efficiency. The wins at TAC underpin SAS’s commitment to sustainability.

Paving the Way to Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

However, SAS is leading the way to make aviation more sustainable. The group has set an ambitious target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Innovation, operational efficiency, and the use of sustainable fuel are key areas through development transformation the airline.

According to Travel Radar, Mads Brandstrup, senior vice president of communication and public affairs at SAS, shared :

“Sustainability is the foundation of all we do. Winning awards in two categories in The Aviation Challenge 2024 feels particularly great. We are proud, and it shows how everyone at SAS has been working towards this, with more to come for many years within aviation.”

Above all,  SAS will host the next edition of The Aviation Challenge in Copenhagen in 2025, where SkyTeam member airlines will come together to share innovative solutions and continue driving sustainability across the aviation industry. This will further cement SAS’s position as a leader in sustainable aviation and a hub for collaboration within the global aviation community.
