Spirit Airlines is close to liquidation, amid the carriers’ financial troubles. Due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, the carrier was impacted by the fuel shortage and skyrocketing prices.

About the Airline

Spirit Airlines is an ultra-low-cost carrier based in the United States, with headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida. It operates domestic and international flights to more than 60 destinations, including locations across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The airline operates an all-Airbus fleet of around 100 aircraft, primarily consisting of A320 and A321 models. The carrier has announced plans to begin shrinking its fleet in 2025, reducing it from roughly 200 aircraft as part of its restructuring strategy.

In 2023, Spirit became the largest ultra-low-cost carrier in the United States. However, the airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2024 and later completed a financial restructuring. Continued financial pressures remain one of the main factors contributing to concerns about the carrier’s long-term stability.

Risk for Liquidation

Two main factors are contributing to concerns about the airline’s possible liquidation: its recent bankruptcy restructuring and rising fuel costs linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The aviation industry as a whole continues to face challenges related to fuel availability and pricing.

Fuel remains the airline’s largest operating expense. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), fuel prices in North America have increased significantly in recent years, placing additional financial pressure on carriers including Spirit. Disruptions affecting shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz could further contribute to volatility in fuel markets.

It remains unclear whether the airline will ultimately face liquidation. Spirit Airlines has said it does not comment on speculation and will provide updates if there are any changes affecting its operations or financial position.
