Ryanair, Europe’s largest low-fare airline has recently endorsed Sweden’s proposal to abolish its aviation tax , a bold move that could impact the aviation industry. Sweden’s support is based on the fact that the taxes do not promote sustainable aviation or the country’s economic growth, tourism, employment and low-cost connectivity for Swedish citizens. Hence, the airline recognises the move as visionary claiming that the tax has functioned as catalyst to the country’s post-covid recovery.
Strategic Growth
Ryanair’s CEO Eddie Wilson claimed :
“Ryanair welcomes the Swedish Govt’s innovative and forward-thinking proposal to abolish the harmful Aviation Tax, which has been holding back Sweden’s post-Covid recovery and stifling traffic, job, and economic growth. Abolishing the tax from next July will bring the competitiveness of Sweden’s access costs more in line with its EU counterparts and allow Ryanair to deliver record growth and investment for Sweden over the next 6 years, as we have done elsewhere in Europe”
More particularly, if Sweden abolishes the aviation tax it will attract many airlines including the competitive Ryanair which will function as a connectivity hub to Central Europe. In addition, with the company increasing its fleet by 50 new aircrafts over the next year , Sweden could become an ideal candidate for growth and aviation expansion due to enhanced affordable flight options. Furthermore according to the company’s CEO:
“Ryanair is currently finalizing its Summer 2025 schedule and deciding where to place its next 50 new enviro-efficient aircraft – which reduce CO2 emissions by 20% and noise by 50% – that it will take delivery of over the next year. If Sweden is to pass the Govt’s proposal to abolish the Aviation Tax, it would put Sweden at the top of the line to receive some of these highly sought after Ryanair aircraft, and the investment, routes, jobs, and low fares that come with them.”
Given that announcement, Ryanair is planning to allocate its 50 new, environmentally friendly aircrafts to Sweden if the country puts this profitable measure in effect. It is also worth noting that Ryanair recently declared record -breaking traffic number and an 8% increase setting new monthly record of around 20.5 million guests. Thus, the country could benefit both environmentally and economically if this dynamic airline decides to invest in the country.
Environmental Controversy
While Sweden’s decision to remove flight taxes is welcomed by the majority of airlines including Ryanair and organizations such the International Air Transport Association (IATA) , it has sparked controversy over the potential environmental impact, particularly in a country that strives for aviation decarbonisation. However, the government’s decision to embrace this proposal will benefit both Ryanair and the country’s financial growth and their sustainable aviation expansion within Europe.
