Qantas Group and Melbourne Airport have reached a commercial agreement that will pave the way for more flights, a new international business lounge and major airport upgrades as part of MEL long-term expansion plans.

The agreement supports the airport’s A$4.5 billion international terminal expansion programme and includes a 15-year commitment linked to Melbourne Airport’s third runway, which is scheduled to open in 2031.

Airport expansion will boost capacity

The terminal expansion will include five additional widebody aircraft gates, supporting future growth in Qantas and increasing capacity for international services.

The agreement will also deliver upgrades to the passenger experience, including improved check in facilities like premium check-in areas and upgraded automated bag drop using MEL’s new baggage handling system. Passengers arriving in Melbourne will also benefit from an expanded baggage reclaim hall and additional space for Australian Border Force operations.

Qantas Group Chief Financial Officer, Rob Marcolina said:

“This will unlock growth for both Qantas and Melbourne Airport and improve the travel experience for millions of our customers every year.”

Supporting international growth

As part of the agreement, Qantas will build a new International Business Lounge above Terminal 2. The airline said the new facility will be up to a third larger than its current lounge and is expected to be completed by 2029.

Qantas also plans to base some of its future Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft at MEL, which it says will allow it to launch new international routes that are not currently possible.

The agreement also backs the delivery of MEL’s third runway, due to open in 2031, with Jetstar expected to benefit from additional opportunities for growth.

MEL Chief Executive Officer Lorie Angus described the agreement as a significant milestone for the airport and the state.

“We’re pleased to be partnering with Qantas to deliver the most significant upgrade to Melbourne Airport in its history.”

Qantas and MEL said final agreements are expected to be signed in the coming months.
