Why Are Flights Being Stopped at Liège?

Liège Airport has had a long history of commercial aviation with several airlines, including SABENA, Constellation Airlines and Jetair – later incorporated into TUI Airlines Belgium, serving the airport. From 1994 onwards, Liège served commercial passengers with routes to popular vacation destinations like Spain, Turkey, and Greece.

In July 2025, German company TUI announced that it would remove its subsidiary airline, Fly Belgium, from Liège due to low profitability in commercial flights. Despite being built for one million passengers, just under 162,000 passengers passed through Liège Airport in 2024, an 8% decrease from 2023. TUI stated that the Liège hub lacked the capacity to “meet expectations in terms of profitability” and had only one of its aircraft based at the airport.

Christian Delcourt, a spokesperson for the airport, said that he understood the reasoning behind TUI’s decision, stating:

You need at least three planes based in an airport to start becoming profitable”

He also added that passenger transport at the airports amounts to “less than 2%” of Liège’s revenue.”

The Cargo Route That Liège Airport Handles

Liège Airport had a 14% increase in cargo in 2025 compared to the previous year of 2024. It handled over 1.32 million tonnes of cargo.

Cargo operations at the airport is based around handling goods, freight distribution, as well as live cargo with a dedicated equestrian hotel. FedEx, DHL, and Qatar Airways all operate cargo facilities out of Liège.

Alongside Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Liège is one of the busiest airport cargo handlers in Europe and is consistently ranked in the Top 25 airports globally.
