On this day, in 1936, Louise Thaden won the Bendix Trophy Race as she soared from New York to California. She was the first woman to achieve this title, marking a significant milestone in the history of women in aviation.

Louise Thaden Wins the Bendix Trophy Race!

Louise Thaden was the first woman to win the Bendix Trophy Race, flying with her co-pilot, Blanche Wilcox Noyes, from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, to Mines Field in Los Angeles, California. The journey was carried out in a Beech “Staggerwing” C17R and took 14 hours, 55 minutes, and 1 second from start to finish.

Thaden set a new record for her journey, stopping only once to refuel at the Beech Aircraft Company factory in Wichita, Kansas. She impressively defeated twin-engine planes that had been designed specifically for racing, blazing ahead in the first year that women were allowed to compete against men.

Thaden and Noyes’ prize for placing first was $4,500 USD (roughly $104,500 USD in modern standards.) Thaden was also awarded the Harmon Trophy for her achievement – aviation’s highest honour given to women.

Staggerwing C17R No. 81

Two years ago, in 2023, Thaden and Noyes’ winning Staggerwing was restored to its former glory. The aircraft was verified to be Thaden and Noyes’ number 81 before the work took place.

Key work was carried out on the recovered wings and tails. The fuselage wood and metalwork were completed before being sealed with epoxy, and hidden racing flaps were restored on the underside of the wings. The original windshield remained intact, including chips from the Sherwin-Williams blue that was mentioned on the plane’s order paperwork.

Following careful restoration, the Staggerwing was put up for auction, presented by Airspace Auctions. The significant aircraft sold for $105,000 USD – just over the amount Thaden and Noyes won for their impressive flight!
