Australia is about to get a new budget domestic airline that aims to compete with Qantas and Virgin. Koala Airlines is set to launch in 2026, as per reports.

Australia’s new budget domestic airline
The upcoming Australian airline’s founding CEO, Bill Astling, is looking to disrupt the region’s domestic aviation market with a new approach.
The airline’s website is currently live. According to the information given on the website, the airline mentions that post-regulatory changes in Australia in 1990, when more than two airlines were allowed to operate in the region, many low-cost carriers have failed to sustain in the market. The airline’s website mentions cheaper fares, leading to unsustainable competition for such airlines.
Koala Airlines said:
“Koala’s strategy will fundamentally differ from previous entrants in a domestic market which has been long dominated by two major airlines since the Australian government first introduced the Two Airline Policy in 1952.”
It added:
“Our goal is to carve out a unique niche that enhances the industry landscape without disrupting existing standards by creating a lasting impact on the industry.”
The company is looking to stand out in the region’s domestic aviation market through “new initiatives and innovations.” It is looking to be a complementary addition to the market rather than competing with the current norms.
The launch follows the collapse of Bonza, a low-cost airline that was looking to compete with Qantas and Virgin. The airline collapsed owing to insufficient access to Sydney Airport and a shortage of aircraft.

Koala Airlines history
The airline was founded by Astling, an aviation veteran in March 2018. The company then acquired air tours and charter flights company Desert Air Safaris Pty Ltd in 2018. Desert Air Safaris was over 50 years old and had been operating throughout Australia, PNG and the Pacific Islands.
Koala Airlines said:
“This acquisition brought together two passionate entities dedicated to enhancing travel experiences both domestically and internationally. The legacy of Desert Air will continue under the rebranded name of Koala Airlines.”
The airline’s founding CEO has been a part of the tourism and aviation industry for over 45 years with experience in aviation management, airline restructuring, customer service and operations, among other areas.
Astling has been active in leadership and advisory roles for 12 existing and start-up airlines in the Asia Pacific Region since the 1990s. His professional endeavours prior to founding the new airline include names such as Air India, Singapore Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, Angel Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Sahara Airlines, to name a few.
One of his prior stints includes aviation consultant to the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia.
The upcoming Australian budget airline has not exactly detailed its strategy or shared how it will begin its operations. The airline is currently in the process of acquiring its fleet. The details are yet to be known. However, according to sample images on its website, it appears that the airline might use Boeing 737-Max aircraft as part of its fleet.
