As Malaysia Airlines embarks on an ambitious plan to grow, it is turning its attention to India’s promising aviation market. With a presence in nine Indian cities, the airline aims to increase its operation with extra flight frequencies, particularly to Trivandrum and Ahmedabad. The airline apart from currently operating flights to nine Indian towns including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Amritsar, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kochi, plans to explore new regional destinations.  As the country experiences robust economic development the airline recognises the upcoming opportunities by expanding to India.

Flight capacity and challenges in the Indian market

Malaysia Airlines operates 71 weekly flights to this region and presents an increase to Amritsar from four to seven flights per week. Despite this upward trend in air travel demand, the airline faces some challenges concerning manpower deficiencies and supply chain problems as it seeks to expand its operations in India. As a consequence, it has limited its network until December. However, the carrier remains optimistic about overcoming these barriers. More particularly, the airline has signed a partnership with Air India and Vistara that enables more efficient travels for passengers and broadens the airline’s access to destinations not exclusively operated by Malaysia Airlines.

Connection with Europe

Beginning in March 2025, the carrier will resume its flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle after a nine-year gap marking an important expansion into the European market. Initially, offering four flights per week with plans to increase daily air-travels, this route will help reconnect Kuala Lumpur with the French capital but also will position Malaysia Airlines as a connection point to Asia. Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), said:

“Our expansion into Europe marks a significant milestone for Malaysia Airlines. With the arrival of additional widebody aircraft starting this Quarter 4, we are ready to bring this long-awaited city back into our network. While the European market is highly competitive, we see tremendous potential for this route to attract key travelers, not just from Malaysia but also from neighboring regions.”

Alongside this European expansion, the carrier is planning to enhance its fleet with the addition of the Airbus A330-900neo. The first of twenty airbuses will arrive in Kuala Lumpur in October and will commence the Kuala Lumpur-Melbourne route in November. In addition, this contemporary version will replace the older A330-300 with 28 business-class seats offering extra passenger comfort. From your point of view, how will Malaysia Airlines’ expansion shape the future of the aviation market?
