Sustainability across air travel has become a top priority for passengers flying with Lufthansa Group. In 2025, more than 5% of travellers opted for a sustainable travel alternative, compared to 0.1% in 2022, following the introduction of Green Fares. Over the same period, the volume of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) sold through the group’s products and services more than doubled, reflecting growing awareness of aviation’s environmental impact.

Lufthansa’s Green Fares

Lufthansa’s Green Fares, introduced on Feb. 23, are designed to make lower-emission flying more accessible and increase appeal for more sustainable travel options. These tickets include a contribution toward offsetting the estimated CO₂ emissions of a passenger’s journey, combined with the use of SAF and additional travel benefits such as flexible booking options. To date, more than 4 million passengers have opted for a Green Fares ticket, indicating strong uptake among environmentally conscious travellers.

Businesses enjoy sustainable offers too

For businesses, these initiatives offer both environmental and strategic advantages. Corporate customers can purchase SAF in bulk, helping reduce their indirect emissions while demonstrating measurable progress toward sustainability targets. Companies investing at least €2,000 receive a Scope 3 emissions certificate aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, supporting their environmental reporting. In 2025 alone, over 1,680 companies worldwide invested in SAF through Lufthansa Group.

Lufthansa Cargo corporate customers can also select the “Sustainable Choice” add-on to reduce the carbon footprint of freight transport.

From an environmental perspective, SAF plays a key role in reducing lifecycle carbon emissions compared to conventional jet fuel, although supply remains limited and costs are significantly higher. While programs like Green Fares do not eliminate aviation emissions, they represent a transitional step toward more sustainable flying.
