The Lufthansa Group has announced a significant milestone in its acquisition of ITA Airways. The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) has appointed two seasoned Lufthansa executives to the airline’s new Board of Directors. Lufthansa has acquired a 41% stake in ITA Airways for 325 million euros, with MEF retaining the majority ownership. This development finalises Lufthansa Group’s acquisition. The strategic move marks a crucial step in the German carrier’s integration of the Italian national airline into its operations.

ITA Airways Board Appointments

With new appointments for the airline, the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance has endorsed Lufthansa’s vision for ITA Airways. Joerg Eberhart and Lorenza Maggio have been named to the five-member Board of Directors of ITA Airways. The Lufthansa executives will bring extensive experience from their roles within the Lufthansa Group.

Jeorg Eberhart has been serving as the Head of Strategy & Organisational Devlopment for Lufthansa Group since 2021. In this role, he has played a crucial part in the acquisition of ITA Airways. Eberhart’s experience includes having been the President and CEO of Air Dolomiti and Managing Director of Lufthansa CityLine GmbH in Munich. Eberhart also has several years of experience as a lecturer in air traffic management at the Politecnico di Milano

Lorenza Maggio brings a strong commercial background to the board. Maggio is the Vice President Sales EMEA for Lufthansa Airlines and has previous experience in brand and customer strategy for Eurowings. The Italian Lufthansa executive has an extensive portfolio of managing commercial and sales activities across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Strategic Implications

The appointment of these executives to the ITA Airways board signifies Lufthansa and MEF’s synergy. Overall, the board appointments reflect an investment in strategy, sales and industry expertise in the Italian aviation landscape. These appointments will facilitate a smooth transition and effective implementation of Lufthansa’s strategic expansion. The decision is expected to strengthen Lufthansa’s position in the Italian market and ensure further growth. Lufthansa Group has secured options to increase its stake in ITA Airways to 90% with the possibility of full ownership in the future. Meanwhile, the German group already has holdings in several other European airlines, including another Italian carrier, Air Dolomiti. While ITA Airways is retaining its brand identity, the partnership will streamline operations and enhance efficiency across both airlines.
