easyJet has achieved a milestone by becoming the world’s first airline to trial a lightweight paint for aircraft that reduces aircraft weight and fuel consumption. In partnership with Mankiewicz Aviation Coatings, this innovative paint system reflects easyJet’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact.

The airline has already applied the new paint to 38 aircraft. By 2030, easyJet plans to complete a fleet-wide rollout, which could save up to 1,296 tonnes of fuel consumption and cut carbon emissions by around 4,095 tonnes of CO2e.

Reducing Weight and Boosting Efficiency with Lightweight Paint

This advanced lightweight paint for aircraft reduces the material required to create easyJet’s signature livery, trimming 27 kilograms per aircraft.

Although the weight savings are modest per plane, the cumulative impact across the fleet drives significant operational efficiencies.

According to the statement, Lahiru Ranasinghe, Director of Sustainability, shared :

“easyJet is constantly exploring innovative solutions to lower the impact of our operations. This lightweight paint is one of many steps we’re taking to achieve our sustainability goals.”

Collaboration Driving Sustainability

easyJet partnered with MAAS Aviation and Mankiewicz Aviation Coatings to implement this initiative. MAAS Aviation painted the aircraft at its Maastricht facility, while Mankiewicz provided the advanced coating solution

Both companies highlighted their dedication to environmental stewardship.

In the statement to Travel Radar, Andrew Richardson , Aviation Sales Manager at Mankiewicz Aviation Coatings mention:

“We are proud to work with easyJet on this groundbreaking initiative. Sustainability and environmental guardianship are at the core of our values.”

Speaking to Travel Radar, Richard Marston, Chief Commercial Officer at MAAS Aviation, commented:

“We strive to use cutting-edge technology that delivers high performance while reducing environmental impact.”

Lightweight paint is just a part of easyJet’s roadmap towards net-zero emissions by 2050. The airline has implemented several other measures, including fleet renewal, operational efficiencies, and the use of advanced software like Descent Profile Optimisation.

With growing pressure on the aviation sector to decarbonize, easyJet is leading the way with lower-weight paint, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable innovation. It is for this reason that the airline remains at the forefront in setting environmental responsibility benchmarks within the industry.
