JetBlue Airways has begun using Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to expand its one-stop connection sites between less crucial American cities and destinations within Latin America and the Caribbean. This new development is another demonstration of American carriers capitalising on Spirit Airlines’ collapse.

Spirit Airlines’ Collapse Becoming an Opportunity

The breakdown of Spirit Airlines presented itself as an enormous business opportunity for JetBlue. Marty St. George, the carrier’s president, disclosed on their second-quarter earnings call the openings derived from Spirit’s liquidation. St. George explained that their connection network has been enhanced through the airline’s ending, being one of the largest network opportunities for JetBlue.

“Given our existing focus city there, Spirit’s exit represented one of the most significant strategic opportunities JetBlue has seen in many years”, explains St. George.

Through the end of Spirit Airlines, the carrier was able to enlarge its connection links in Fort Lauderdale, which is an important connecting hub for domestic and international destinations.

FLL’s Connectivity

The strengthening of FLL’s connectivity now opens up doors to link secondary cities within the United States to Latin America and the Caribbean. For instance, St. George uses the example of Albany, where travellers now have much easier access to all their destinations in Central and South America given FLL’s connectivity.

During 2026, JetBlue is scheduled to offer close to 6.5 million departure flights from Fort Lauderdale, displaying a significant increase of 55% from 2025. Additionally, this establishes the carrier as the airline with the largest presence at the airport following Spirit’s liquidation.
