Icy weather condition continues across Central Europe, forcing several major airports to close on Tuesday, January 13, causing widespread flight disruptions.

Airport Closures and Flight Disruptions

Vienna International Airport shut down temporarily as a thick layer of ice formed across runways, while Prague’s Vaclav Havel Airport operations have been described as heavily limited. Furthermore, Budapest and Bratislava airports also faced closures due to freezing rain and snow.

Until 11 a.m., Vienna International Airport remained closed after ice repeatedly formed on its runways despite clearing efforts. Flights have been diverted to nearby airports and arrivals will resume only once staff deem it safe. Similarly, Prague Airport were forced to limit operations as freezing rain left runways covered in ice. Firefighters and ground crews worked to de-ice planes and tarmacs but delays have continued throughout the morning.

Budapest Airport halted all departures and arrivals starting from 10:25 a.m. local time due to black ice, according to an airport statement. Bratislava Airport in Slovakia also closed temporarily. Airlines have asked passengers to check flight updates online before traveling.

Recovery After Operational Challenges

Snowplows, de-icing vehicles and emergency crews worked intensively to restore safe runway conditions. While Vienna and Bratislava airports have reopened later this morning, Prague and Budapest airports continue operating on a limited schedule as crews work to clear runways safely. The news comes after Storm Goretti swept across the U.K. last week, causing heavy snow, strong winds, and widespread travel disruptions.
