AEMET; Spain’s national meteorological agency, issued a red warning for torrential rain in Ibiza and Formentera. AEMT forecasted more than 180mm of rain in twelve hours. Ibiza rainfall causes the closure of the main airport road and major flooding in Ibiza town.

Red Warning for rainfall
Later in the day, AEMT reported record-breaking rainfall across several locations, including Ibiza and Formentera. A notable record was 254 l/m² (litres per square metre) in Ibiza town in just a few hours, which is more than half of what would fall in a year in the area. yesterday has been Ibiza’s wettest day since 1952.

Ibiza Airport road
ENAIRE, the air navigation management office, has requested that passengers check their flight information regularly. Videos have been shared across X of internal leaks at Ibiza international airport after the record rainfall.
The red weather warning is still in place as of today, and the City Council has reported that the airport road is currently closed as of 10:56 AM, although it is being cleaned by UME staff. They recommend drivers to use the S.Josep Road to access the airport, which is still operational.

Military cleanup
UME, the military emergencies unit, has deployed staff to affected areas to help pump out the water. UME staff have worked throughout the night to pump water from Ibiza airport and clean the airport motorway, as well as pumping water from homes and affected roads.
There is also currently an ongoing crisis meeting of the emergency coordination centre. Advice for all is to check the City Council’s X platform for immediate travel updates. All residents and tourists should contact 112 for emergencies.

Airline update
Iberia Airlines has introduced a fare flexibility policy for customers who may wish to change their flights, provided they are still being operated. Iberia are allowing customers to rebook their flights on the same route or within 300km until 7th October 2025.
