Geneva Airport has partnered with air transport technology provider SITA to deploy a next-generation Airport Operations System (AOS) designed to streamline passenger journeys and enhance efficiency across every part of the airport. The initiative is part of a broader digital transformation effort as the airport prepares for passenger numbers expected to reach 20 million annually by 2030. Modernisation will enhance the passenger experience and lay the foundations for further developing a new terminal.

Modernisation and Partnership
The new AOS combines all operational systems into a single real-time system, including aircraft movements, parking stands, check-in counters, boarding gates, and baggage belts. This integrated approach enables airport teams, airlines, and ground handlers to access the same live data, allowing for faster decision-making and better coordination.
In partnership with SITA, Geneva Airport has already successfully introduced self-service bag drops and digital information systems across the terminal. The AOS upgrade will help the airport operate smoothly, improve passenger comfort, and meet sustainability commitments.

Technology and Innovation
SITA’s technology uses real-time visibility and predictive analytics to monitor airport activity and anticipate operational challenges before they occur. The system provides all stakeholders with a unified view of flights, resources, and passenger flow, helping to prevent congestion and reduce delays.
The AOS is also designed with scalability in mind, supporting the airport’s future growth and aligning with its CAP2030 infrastructure programme. By optimising operations and energy use, Geneva Airport expects to achieve measurable efficiency gains while reducing its environmental impact.

Industry Context
As airports worldwide face growing passenger demand and tighter sustainability targets, Geneva’s adoption of smart operations technology sets an important precedent. The airport has limited physical space to expand, but the potential for digital growth is abundant and can improve efficiency.
Across Europe, other major hubs, such as Frankfurt and Schiphol, are investing in similar systems to enhance operations. Geneva stands out as an early adopter among mid-sized airports embracing modern AOS.

Key People
Gilles Ruffenacht, CEO of Geneva Airport, said:
“As passenger numbers continue to rise, we need to ensure every aspect of the airport operates in perfect synchrony. SITA’s technology allows us to deliver a seamless, stress-free journey while maintaining operational excellence.”
Sergio Colella, President of SITA Europe, added:
“Geneva Airport has long been a pioneer in adopting technology that improves the travel experience. This latest implementation brings new intelligence and flexibility to airport operations.”

Looking ahead
Since digital systems, such as self-service bag drops, were introduced, passenger satisfaction has risen by 70%. The project lays the groundwork for an Airport Operations Plan (AOP) that will bring closer collaboration between all airport stakeholders. AOS adoption marks the next stage in a 20-year collaboration between Geneva Airport and SITA. In the future, there are plans to replace the main terminal and evolve the airport into a mobility hub for all modes of transport.
