Frontier Airlines is expanding its network at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York, adding a nonstop service from Detroit as the low-cost carrier continues to grow in markets previously served by Spirit Airlines.
Frontier Adds New York Service From Detroit
The Detroit-LaGuardia route will begin Nov. 20, with daily flights during peak holiday travel periods and three flights per week at other times. The new service will bring Frontier’s Detroit network to 15 nonstop destinations, 11 of which were previously served by Spirit before the airline ceased operations earlier this year. This new route is part of a broader expansion at DTW. The airline is also increasing service to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Tampa International Airport (TPA), Orlando International Airport (MCO), and Miami International Airport (MIA).
Frontier expects to offer 41% more seats from Detroit in March 2027 than it did a year earlier. Josh Flyr, Frontier’s vice president of network and operations design, said the expansion is intended to give travelers more low-cost options from Detroit.
“Frontier’s continuing growth at DTW means more affordable flight options to more destinations, which is a win for cost-conscious consumers looking for their new value airline of choice,” Flyr said.
He added that this New York service joins Frontier’s growing list of nonstop leisure destinations from Detroit.
Frontier Moves Into Former Spirit Markets
The airline’s expansion reflects Frontier’s strategy of adding capacity in markets where Spirit previously operated. Of Frontier’s 15 nonstop destinations from Detroit, 11 were previously served by Spirit, which ceased passenger operations May 2, 2026, following a failed effort to secure additional financing and a subsequent liquidation process.
With Spirit Airlines no longer operating the route, Frontier’s new service will provide an alternative for travelers flying between Detroit and New York.
“We are excited to show travelers that flying can be both low cost and high value,” said Flyr.
Frontier is advertising introductory fares from $69, although fares and schedules are subject to change. The Detroit-LaGuardia service is scheduled to begin Nov. 20.
