In a bold move that underlines the increasing importance of collaboration in the aviation industry, Qatar Airways Cargo and Japan Airlines have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to boost their cargo alliance. The agreement not only highlights their long-term relationship as Oneworld Alliance members but also aims to improve connectivity, expand product offerings, and provide a smooth experience for cargo customers across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
The MOU comes at a pivotal moment for both airlines. Japan Airlines recently resumed freighter operations after 13 years, signalling its renewed commitment to the cargo sector. Meanwhile, Qatar Airways cargo, known for its expansive network and innovative logistics solutions, strengthens its global presence. Together the two carriers aim to form new collaborations by incorporating their hub operations in Doha and Tokyo ensuring customers benefit from broader destination access and improved operational efficiency.
Expanding global cargo networks via strategic alliances
The partnership will bring substantial economic benefits by enhancing trade flows between the regions. Over the past twelve months, Qatar Airways Cargo and JAL CARGO handled 4.462 tonnes of goods in Japan, a figure set to increase with the launch of direct freighter services between Hamad International Airport and Tokyo Narita Airport in 2025. Specifically, this strategic expansion will allow both airlines to maximise their potential.
Japan Airlines Executive Officer and Senior Vice President, Head of Cargo and Mail, Mr. Yuichiro Kito, and Qatar Airways Cargo Chief Officer, Mr. Mark Drusch signed the Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer and Engineer Badr Mohammed Al-Meer.
Regarding the partnership, Mark Drusch, Chief Officer of Cargo for Qatar Airways Cargo said:
“This MoU symbolises a commitment to a deeper partnership, aiming to integrate both networks via the hubs in Doha and Tokyo. This will enhance network connectivity and product offerings for customers, linking Japan to Qatar Airways’ extensive network in Europe, the Middle East, the Levant, and Africa, and vice versa. Customers will benefit from improved connectivity and access to a wider range of destinations.”
In addition, Yuichiro Kitof, Executive Officer, Senior Vice President, Head of Cargo and Mail for Japan Airlines commented:
“This agreement further strengthens the long-standing partnership between JAL and Qatar Airways Cargo. For the first time in 13 years, we have commenced the operation of our own freighters. Through this agreement, JALCARGO will leverage JAL’s passenger flights, freighter network, and the newly expanded Qatar Airways network to deliver customers’ cargo to an even broader range of destinations than ever before.”
Boosting global trade connections
As Air cargo plays a critical role in the global aviation industry, strategic partnerships display how airlines can achieve mutual growth while meeting customer needs. Therefore, by integrating their operations, Qatar Airways cargo and JAL set a new standard for cooperation in the cargo section.
