Taiwanese carrier, EVA Air has reached a significant milestone with its sustainability practices being recognised on a global scale. For the first time, the airline has joined Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and received global recognition as the top airline in the 2024 S&P Global Sustainability Assessment. The achievement reflects the airline’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. Therefore, setting an important benchmark for the commercial aviation industry. From the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to a sustainability cooperation with Airbus, EVA Air is promoting a greener future in air travel.

What are the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices?

The S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) are a prominent family of indices that assess the sustainability performances of publicly traded companies globally. Importantly, the DJSI serves as a comprehensive guide for investors, distinguishing companies that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. Launched in 1999, the prestigious DJSI provide investors with benchmarks for sustainable investment. The indices cover a range of industries and provide insights sector-specific sustainability performance. Companies that make it onto these indices are considered leaders in sustainability within their respective sectors.

Recognition as Top Airline

Announcing their index membership on Dec 17, 2024, EVA airline has been acknowledged as the top airline in the 2024 S&P Global Sustainability Assessment. The accolade positions EVA Air as a market leader in sustainable air travel. It therefore comes as little surprise that the airline has demonstrated their commitment to sustainability through a variety of initiatives. Recently the airline partnered with Airbus to enhance the development and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Overall, the partnership is exploring decarbonisation strategies and ensuring infrastructure readiness for SAF integration over the next two years. The Taiwanese airline has already showcased its leadership in sustainable aviation with SAF adoption. In 2023, the carrier successfully operated a passenger flight from Haneda Airport in Japan to Songshan Airport in Taiwan using a 40% SAF blend.

In further efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, EVA Air will also upgrade its current fleet. The airline is set to acquire Airbus’ latest generation of low-emission aircraft. Specifically, the carrier’s fleet modernisation program includes orders for 18 long-range A350-1000 and 15 single-aisle A321neo aircraft. These new aircraft will reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to older models.

Ultimately, EVA Air’s admission into the ranks of the DJSI and recognition as the top sustainable airline underscore its strong commitment to sustainable practices. Through strategic partnerships and SAF adoption, EVA Air is paving the way for a greener future in air travel.
