Emirates has introduced what it says is the world’s first multi-way adjustable Economy Class headrest, designed to give passengers greater neck and head support during long-haul flights. Named the U-Dream Headrest, the new feature is already being installed across the airline’s fleet and will eventually be available on all Emirates A350 aircraft, most Airbus A380s, and Boeing 777s, as well as every new Boeing 777X on order.
Aiming to improve in-flight comfort
Developed for Safran Seats’ Z400 Economy seat, the leather U-Dream headrest features padded, adjustable side wings that fold inward to support passengers’ heads and necks while they sleep. The headrest can also move vertically to suit different heights and seating positions. According to Emirates, the design has been independently tested to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards and is intended to provide ergonomic support more commonly associated with premium cabins.
Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline, said:
“The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep – by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed. It’s another innovation that shows our commitment to customers and cements our Economy Class as the best.”
Part of wider Economy Class investment
The U-Dream headrest is already flying on three Emirates A350 aircraft, with installation set to be completed across the airline’s entire A350 fleet by the end of the year.
Cabin crew have been trained to help passengers adjust the headrest, while the leather design has been created for easy cleaning between flights. Alongside the new headrest, the airline highlighted other long-haul amenities, including its ICE entertainment system and family-friendly services.
