Philippine Airlines has announced plans to modernise its long-haul fleet after committing to order up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners at the Farnborough International Airshow. The agreement includes an order for 15 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, with an option to purchase a further five jets.
Dreamliners to strengthen operations
The Boeing 787-10 will join Philippine Airlines’ existing fleet of 10 Boeing 777 aircraft, providing greater flexibility across the carrier’s medium and long-haul routes.
According to Boeing, the 787-10 offers the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody aircraft and uses 25% less fuel than the aircraft it typically replaces. The aircraft can carry between 300 and 375 passengers and has a range of up to 13,890 kilometres (7,500 nautical miles).
Passengers travelling on board the aircraft will also benefit from features such as larger dimmable windows, higher cabin humidity, and technology designed to reduce the effects of turbulence.
Fleet investment marks 80 years
Lucio C. Tan III, president and chief operating officer at PAL Holdings, said the investment reflects the airline’s confidence in future demand and its long-term strategy.
“This investment manifests our confidence in the future of Philippine Airlines and the continued growth of air travel. The Boeing 787-10 will strengthen our medium and long-haul fleet, allowing us to provide an even better travel experience for our customers while improving operational efficiency and supporting our long-term sustainability goals.”
The announcement also marks 80 years of partnership between the airline and Boeing. The airline celebrated its 85th anniversary earlier this year.
Philippine Airlines currently serves 29 domestic destinations and 40 international destinations across Asia, North America, Australia and the Middle East. The airline said the additional Dreamliners will help meet growing passenger demand while supporting its long-term sustainability and expansion plans.
