EgyptAir, the flag carrier for Egypt, is forming a partnership with Equatorial Guinea, offering support in maintenance, training, and aviation infrastructure. This collaboration aims to revitalise the country’s civil aviation infrastructure, hoping to revive the country’s flagship airline, Ceiba Intercontinental.

Discussion
A high-level delegation from EgyptAir Maintenance and Engineering recently visited Malabo, having been invited by Equatorial Guinea’s minister of civil aviation and infrastructure to discuss their collaboration across aircraft maintenance, workforce development, and the management of aviation infrastructure.
Ibrahim Fathi, EgyptAir Maintenance and Engineering chairman, said the two sides would draft Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and a detailed action plan covering the management of aircraft maintenance facilities, including widebody-capable hangars at Mongomo.
Ahmed Adel, EgyptAir chairman and CEO, said the visit formed part of the airline’s broader African expansion strategy. He said the group aims to establish logistical and technical hubs to support the modernisation of Equatorial Guinea’s aviation sector and to strengthen connectivity between Cairo and Central and West Africa.

Strategic partnership
Ceiba Intercontinental, the national carrier for Equatorial Guinea, has struggled over the years. They have limited operational activity, with only one aircraft, a Boeing 777-200LR, being active last month. Other aircraft in the fleet, including the ATR72-500, ATR42-320(F), and Boeing 767-300ER, have not been recorded as active.
By partnering with EgyptAir, one of Africa’s well established airlines with decades of experience, technical expertise and resources to provide, it will work on reviving Ceiba Intercontinental.
During the discussions, there was focus on the providing technical training support for the carrier, as well as a proposal to launch a direct route between Cairo International and Malabo. A new, stronger place will be rebuilt for Ceiba Intercontinental in the aviation market.
