Edinburgh Airport (EDI) has revealed a £500 million capital development plan as new CEO Mark Johnston prepares to assume the airport’s top leadership spot and establish Edinburgh as an interconnected city. Alongside these developments, Edinburgh Airport is also seeing a change in leadership. Succeeding Gordon Dewar (who will step down as CEO after 14 years), Johnston will move to Edinburgh Airport as CEO on Oct. 1, 2026.

What will the five-year programme look like?
The five-year programme highlights Global Infrastructure Partners’ (GIP) commitment to Edinburgh Airport. First Minister John Swinney visited the South East Pier expansion of the airport, with the first phase of the development due to open in summer 2027.
This first phase includes new and improved retail, an expanded check-in hall and departure lounge, and new international arrival facilities. The plan also aims to increase the terminal footprint by 60% and add new gates to support route growth.
Edinburgh Airport has been trying to improve passenger experiences and airport infrastructure, and this development plan only accelerates this process.
Swinney said:
This significant investment will enable Edinburgh Airport to compete with airports around the world. Alongside delivering real benefits to passengers, this boost will support Scotland’s international connections and help drive economic growth.
Scotland is open for business and we want to maintain and strengthen Scotland’s position as the most attractive place in the UK for inward investment outside of London and the South East. Opportunities like this airport expansion will help make that happen.
Gordon Dewar, the outgoing CEO of Edinburgh Airport, said:
This is the biggest investment in Edinburgh Airport’s history and comes at one of the most exciting points in its development, adding another important chapter to its story.

Johnston’s leadership and Edinburgh Airport’s growth
Along with new changes comes new leadership, with a heavy focus on Edinburgh Airport’s expansion and Scotland’s increasing connectivity. Mark Johnston will return to his home city to take over as CEO from Oct. 1.
Following the news of Johnston’s appointment, Dewar said:
Mark brings a wealth of aviation experience, strong leadership credentials and a deep understanding of Scotland’s aviation market. Just as importantly, he knows Edinburgh, understands the role this airport plays in the city’s success and recognises its international appeal.
Johnston leading the facility alongside the infrastructure expansion is a milestone for Edinburgh Airport. The £500 million expansion, coinciding with Johnston’s arrival, will create space for the future growth of Edinburgh Airport.
