EcoCeres Inc has announced an agreement with British Airways to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The partnership is expected to reduce British Airways lifecycle carbon emissions.

Multi-year SAF agreement

EcoCeres Inc stated that the airline’s carbon emissions are expected to be reduced by approximately 400,000 metric tons when compared with the use of the same volume of conventional jet fuel. This is equivalent to flying 240,000 economy class passengers on return flights between London and New York.

This partnership is part of British Airways’ commitment to powering 10% of its flights with SAF by 2030. EcoCeres provides SAF produced from 100% waste-based biomass feedstock, such as used cooking oil. According to EcoCeres, the SAF has the potential to provide a lifecycle carbon reduction of up to 80% when compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces.

Carrie Harris, director of sustainability at British Airways, stated SAF is an important part of British Airways’ BA Better World strategy. According to Harris, SAF accounted for 2.7% of British Airways’ total fuel use and is a contribution to their achievement of a 13% reduction in their carbon intensity since 2019. She mentioned the agreement with EcoCeres is an exciting one and that it is another significant step forward on their journey to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Matti Lievonen, CEO of EcoCeres, stated,

“We are proud to partner with British Airways in this strategic agreement to jointly tackle greenhouse gas emissions in aviation.”
