In March 2025, passenger traffic at Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) decreased for the third consecutive month, falling 3% compared to March 2024.

Reasons for Traffic Decline

Some reasons behind this decline include:

  • Economic Aspects That Affect Travel

Growing economic uncertainty could be a major factor in the decline. Reduced consumer confidence due to worries about a possible recession has led to less discretionary vacation spending. This change in consumer behaviour directly affects passenger volume at an airport like RSW, which mostly depends on leisure passengers.

  • Travel Trends After the Pandemic

RSW set a record in 2024, carrying more than 11 million passengers. However, pent-up demand after the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to this spike. It is anticipated that passenger numbers may fall somewhat when travel habits return to more normalized patterns.

  • Regional Competitive Dynamics

In the competitive regional market in which RSW operates, neighbouring airports such as Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) and Orlando International (MCO) are expanding. MCO and SRQ recorded increased passenger traffic in March 2025, which may indicate that visitors are choosing other airports depending on variables like flight availability and cost.

Looking to the Future

Even while the present trend points to a decline, it’s important to keep in mind that several factors, such as the state of the economy and seasonal travel habits, can cause variations in passenger numbers. It will be essential to keep an eye on these developments throughout the year to comprehend the long-term effects on RSW and the larger regional tourism sector.
