Jon Bridge Becomes Cardiff Airport CEO

Jon Bridge has been named as the Welsh airport’s new Chief Executive Officer. His previous experience lies in retail and hospitality, having served as Chief Executive Officer at Welsh brewer SA Brain and Company. His determination and leadership were highly praised in this role as he steered the company through the COVID-19 pandemic, an unpredictable period for companies across the hospitality sector. He has also contributed through an advisory role to the wider Welsh public transport system. In a statement, Jon Bridge said the following regarding the appointment to his new role:

“I’m honoured to be joining Cardiff Airport at such a pivotal time. The National Airport of Wales is a vital asset for our country, providing economic benefits, jobs and ensures global connectivity. We are striving to be the first choice for airline passengers and the centre of Wales’ aviation related industry. I’ll be working hard with our team and partners to continue the process of diversifying the business, driving growth, developing our people and ensuring we continue to provide an excellent experience for our customers.”

The Turbulent History of Cardiff Airport

Cardiff Airport was opened in 1954 after lying abandoned as a former Second World War RAF airfield. Despite investments over the years from British Airways and Ryanair, the airport failed to thrive into a major regional base as was hoped, but instead has remained relatively underutilised since. In 2013, the airline was acquired by the Welsh Government for £52 million.

Since the acquisition, the Welsh Government has invested more than £200 million into the airport. Despite this, it still suffers significant finanical losses each year. With a limited number of airlines and destinations to choose from, many Welsh holidaymakers often choose to fly from the nearby Bristol International Airport (BRS), located just over the Bristol Channel in the South West of England. Multiple CEOs have tried to revitalise Cardiff Airport to make it into a bustling regional hub, however the various leaders have had limited success. It remains to be seen if Jon Bridge will succeed as his role formally begins in November.
