Calgary Airports formerly Calgary Airport Authority has launched the development of its YYC AeroNex project. A strategic centre for air transportation that provides Canadian Airlines with access to competitively priced world-class aviation support services and training. The announcement of YYC AeroNex also includes a $120 million Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) and test cell facility.

Development of YYC AeroNex
The construction of YYC AeroNex is already underway, supported by a $172 million loan from Canada Infrastructure Bank, including an eight million non-repayable federal contributions from PrairiesCan. In addition to this is a $172 million loan from commercial banks. The announcement also included the construction of a $120 million engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), followed by a test cell facility developed in partnership with Lufthansa Technik. The new MRO and test cell facility will service and repair LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B engines for Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus 320neo. Calgary Airports will continue to grow as the airport stated that additional facilities and partnerships will be seen in the near future.
The project aims to position Calgary as a strategic centre for development, training, and innovation in aviation and its ancillary services. The airport aims to bring in professionals through the development of YYC AeroNex. The project will enhance training and provide educational opportunities in the region in Engineering, Design, Technology, and Aviation Trades. This is part of the airport’s strategy to create a sustainable network of high-value jobs. The project is expected to attract airlines and aerospace technology companies in the region. This also includes specialized support services. Another part of the airport’s strategy to build an ecosystem that is expected to increase overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) while diversifying and strengthening the local economy.
