Avelo Airlines is reshaping its business following a major recapitalisation that has left the carrier with one of the strongest cash positions in the U.S. airline industry relative to its size. The financial reset is driving base closures, fleet changes and preparations for future growth overall.

Avelo’s Base Realignment

Avelo plans to concentrate flying around a smaller set of core bases while planning to open a new base in Texas in late 2026. Simultaneously, Avelo is simplifying its fleet and laying down the groundwork for expansion with an order for new-generation regional jets.

The airline stated it would focus its operations around four existing bases: New Haven (Connecticut), Delaware Valley (Philadelphia), Concord/Charlotte (North Carolina) and Lakeland (Florida). Moreover, a fifth base is planned for McKinney (Texas), which is scheduled to open later this year.

As part of this realignment, Avelo will also be closing its bases in Mesa (Arizona), Raleigh-Durham (North Carolina) and Wilmington (North Carolina). Despite these closures, the airline indicated it would continue service in several affected markets. For instance, Raleigh-Durham will remain connected to New Haven and Rochester (New York), while Wilmington will continue to be served from Nashville (Tennessee), Tampa (Florida) and the Washington D.C./Baltimore region.

The carrier said near-term schedule changes tied to the network will affect many customer itineraries. However, impacted customers will be notified directly by email and text, with additional assistance available on Avelo’s website.

Avelo’s Fleet Simplification

Alongside network changes, Avelo is simplifying its fleet by removing six Boeing 737-700 aircraft. The move leaves the airline primarily operating the more fuel-efficient Boeing 737-800, reducing operating costs.

The carrier noted the streamlined fleet and stronger balance sheet position it to scale sustainably in 2026. Avelo is also preparing for longer-term growth through its recent acquisition of 100 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft, making it the first U.S. airline to commit to the type. The new aircraft are expected to support future expansion while improving efficiency across the network.
