U.S. carrier Avelo Airlines has delayed the delivery of its first Embraer E195-E2 aircraft from mid-2027 to 2028. The airline has stated that this decision will allow for more time to prepare internal systems and procedures and to train and certify crewmembers for the new aircraft.
A Little About Avelo Airlines
Avelo Airlines is a US-based low-cost carrier that was launched in April 2021. It focuses on providing affordable, non-stop flights between smaller, underserved airports and popular destinations. In 2025, it ranked in the top three in the U.S. for on-time performance and low cancellation rates and serves over 30 destinations across the U.S.
Avelo’s current fleet comprises of three B737-700s and 14 B737-800s, however, they are transitioning from an all-Boeing 737 fleet to Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. This is to better serve smaller, runway-constrained airports, such as the New Haven base, and improve fuel efficiency. This will allow Avelo to expand its niche as part of its small-city strategy.
Avelo will be the first U.S. carrier to operate Embraer’s largest and most advanced commercial aircraft, making this a significant milestone for Embraer’s flagship E2 program, as it will modernise Avelo’s fleet.
Delayed Embraer Delivery
In September 2025, Avelo Airlines placed a firm order for 50 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 50. As of 2026, the airline has pushed back this delivery until 2028. This delay provides necessary time to prepare for the introduction of a new aircraft type, as the airline currently operates only Boeing 737s. It also enables more time for training crewmembers and upgrading internal systems.
Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy stated:

While the E195-E2s are designed for lower costs on smaller routes, the delayed delivery gives the carrier more time to ensure a smoother transition to the new aircraft.
