Air Canada has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, marking a significant step forward in the airline’s fleet modernisation and network expansion strategy. The aircraft was handed over in Hamburg and is the first of 30 A321XLRs set to join the carrier’s fleet in the coming years.
A New Tool for Network Growth
Leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, the new-generation narrowbody aircraft will allow Air Canada to operate longer routes with improved efficiency while enhancing passenger comfort.
The Airbus A321XLR is expected to play a key role in Air Canada’s future route development, particularly across transatlantic and transcontinental markets.
With its extended range and lower operating costs compared to widebody aircraft, the A321XLR enables the airline to launch new, thinner long-haul routes that would not otherwise be viable. Initial operations are expected to serve destinations across the Atlantic from Montréal and Toronto, as well as deploy on key North American routes.
The aircraft’s flexibility also allows Air Canada to better adapt to seasonal demand and shifting market conditions.
Widebody Experience on a Narrowbody Jet
A standout feature of Air Canada’s A321XLR is its premium onboard product, bringing widebody-style comfort to a single-aisle aircraft.
For the first time, the airline is introducing its Signature Class lie-flat seats on a narrowbody jet, with 14 seats installed in the forward cabin.
Passengers can also expect:
- Larger in-flight entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity
- Fast, complimentary Wi-Fi for Aeroplan members
- Power outlets at every seat
- A redesigned cabin inspired by Canadian landscapes
This new “Glowing Hearted” cabin concept reflects Air Canada’s continued focus on enhancing the onboard experience.
The arrival of the A321XLR is the latest milestone in Air Canada’s multi-year fleet renewal programme, aimed at improving efficiency, reducing emissions, and strengthening its global network.
In addition to the A321XLR, the airline has:
- Eight Airbus A350-1000s on order, scheduled for delivery from 2030
- 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners on order
- Ongoing deliveries of Airbus A220 aircraft
- Recently added Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on lease in 2026
Once certified by Transport Canada, the A321XLR will enter service and be gradually introduced across the airline’s network.
