A subsidiary carrier of American Airlines, Envoy Air, was allowed to carry flights from the U.S. to Venezuela under a temporary basis. This agreement showcases a step towards restarting services to Venezuela.

American Airlines and Venezuela

In May 2019, scheduled flights between the countries were cancelled by the U.S. Transportation Department (DOT). The organisation claimed political instability in Venezuela and opted to suspend operations. The tense relationship between the nations was also a factor that was considered for the suspension.

The airline has a long history of operating in Venezuela, having started its flights to the country in 1987, and it was the last of the North American carriers to stop flying there. The flights were non-stop and departed from Miami destined to land in either Caracas or Maracaibo.

Earlier this year, American Airlines expressed interest in resuming flights following the U.S.’ detention of the leader, Nicolas Maduro. The carrier hopes that the flights will promote opportunities for different trips, such as for business, leisure and humanitarian travel. Nonetheless, the White House still advises citizens not to travel to Venezuela.

Envoy Air’s Flights to Venezuela

Envoy requested to reinitiate flying to Venezuela, which was granted by the U.S. DOT. This agreement is temporary, and only valid for two years. During this time, the carrier will be able to carry passengers, mail, and cargo, and will transport them between Miami and Caracas or Maracaibo.

This is of great significance for U.S.-Venezuela connectivity. It marks a step towards more airlines resuming flights to the country, which will benefit many travellers. Envoy Air will be the pioneer in leading the opening of the route. In similar spirit, the Venezuelan Laser Airlines also expressed interest in serving the U.S. market.

From 2017, until the U.S. ban, the airline was the only carrier to have services to the South American country. Now, following this recent development, American Airlines is close to flying to Venezuela again.

What do you think about this new temporary service? When do you think American Airlines will resume flights to Venezuela? Let us know in the comments.
