Airbus has agreed to additional support worth $94 million for Spirit AeroSystems. The loss-making company makes components for its aircraft, including the Airbus A220 wing factory in Belfast, Northern Ireland (Short Brothers), with Boeing also taking on parts of Spirit AeroSystems.

In January 2012 Spirit AeroSystems delivered its first Airbus A350 XWB composite center fuselage section (Section 15) to Airbus in St-Nazaire, France. The assembly was manufactured at Spirit's Kinston, N.C., facility and shipped to the company's newest plant in France, where it was assembled and delivered to Airbus. Spirit also designs and produces the composite wing spar and wing fixed leading edge for this program.

Airbus continues to support Spirit AeroSystems.

Airbus formally signed a definitive agreement on April 28, 2025 to take control of specific Spirit AeroSystems facilities responsible for producing Airbus aircraft parts. With the additional support, Airbus brought the total financial support to $152 million for the company.

The AeroSystems factory in Belfast has recently seen its loss increase from $338 million to $506 million.

The Belfast factory is split between Boeing and Airbus. Since no third party has shown interest in purchasing the remaining activities, including the A220 mid-fuselage portions and the engine nacelle manufacturing for Rolls-Royce, Boeing is expected to take control of the remainder of the site.

Financial operations at Belfast are at a crucial point, with Spirit AeroSystems Holdings withdrawing its “Letter of Support,” which the Short Brothers plant depended on in the previous fiscal year to stave off insolvency threats.

Boeing has stated that it intends to bring the Belfast plant back on its feet, claiming that it would be “good stewards of the business,” which will be reassuring to the hundreds of employees.

About Spirit AeroSystems

Spirit is a leading non-OEM designer and builder of aerostructures for commercial and defence aircraft. The firm is headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, and sells important components, like as fuselages, pylons, nacelles, and wing structures, to top aerospace manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus. It was once a branch of Boeing until it became independent in 2005. Spirit works worldwide, including locations in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. In 2025, the firm will undergo a significant change, with Boeing purchasing core operations and Airbus taking over Airbus-specific production facilities as part of a strategic split aimed at increasing supply chain management and operating efficiency.
