Malaysia Airlines is strengthening its operational capabilities through the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Turbulence Aware platform, to introduce safer flight operations. The programme is designed specifically to support safer and informed flight operations and improved travel experience for all passengers.

The Programme breakdown

The programme, introduced by Malaysia Airlines, provides pilots with real-time turbulence information from participating airlines worldwide, enabling them to anticipate Clear Air Turbulence (CAT), make more informed flight operations, and improve the comfort of passengers and crew members.

As severe weather becomes more frequent, having access to operational intelligence is crucial for helping airlines strengthen resilience and maintain the highest standards of safety and service.

Malaysia Airlines comments

Aida Salfaraz Ahmad Fadzil, the chief operating officer of Malaysia Airlines, stated:

“At Malaysia Airlines, safety underpins every decision we make, as the operating environment continues to evolve, we remain committed to investigating in technologies and industry partnerships that empower our pilots with better operational insights.”

The COO also states that its adoption of turbulence awareness builds on Malaysia Airlines’ ongoing efforts to strengthen its operational excellence. The company has been recognised as a Seven Star PLUS safety-rated airline by AirlineRatings.com. The accreditation places Malaysia Airlines among global carriers that are recognised for exceptional cabin safety standards, operational discipline and strong company-wide safety culture.

Frederic Leger, SVP products and services at IATA, mentioned:

“Timely data helps airlines to mitigate the impact of turbulence, which improves safety and delivers a more comfortable flight to passengers…Each new airline joining IATA’s Turbulence Aware expands and enriches its coverage, benefitting all passengers.”

Leger also mentioned that he is pleased to welcome Malaysia Airlines to the programme, and the company’s participation significantly strengthens the data coverage, particularly across Asia.

Turbulence and its part in Aviation

Turbulence remains a significant operational challenge in aviation, with potential impacts on both safety and efficiency. Improving access to timely and accurate turbulence data allows better situational awareness for flight crews and contributes to stable and efficient operations across the global aviation network.

An introduction of the Turbulence Aware Programme will allow further safety for passengers, and perhaps a helpful feature for aviation crews.
