Heathrow Airport (LHR) is marking the start of a summer getaway with its busiest day of 2026, welcoming 267,000 passengers on July 19, as schools in the UK break up for summer holidays.
Heathrow Airport (LHR) has processed more than 7.85 million travellers in July, with people booking their summer getaways to Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Cyprus and the Czech Republic.
Despite the surge in airport traffic, Heathrow maintained an impressive operational performance: 98.5% of passengers cleared security checks in under 5 minutes, keeping it Europe’s most punctual hub. The airport also deployed “Here to Help” staff across terminals to help passengers during peak season.
Cargo surge, maxed capacity and expansion talk
Not only did passengers and flights surge, but cargo rates also rose, with 5,000 tonnes of cargo processed on July 12, contributing to a 2% year-on-year increase driven by strong demand from South Asia and North America.
New entrants, including ITA Airways, Alaska Airlines and Riyadh Air, all carried more than 136,000 passengers in July, further adding to Heathrow’s peak season. Istanbul Airport overtook Heathrow as Europe’s busiest hub last month.
Heathrow argues that expansion is essential to secure future trade, investment and tourism, stating that its plans will “ensure the country gets the infrastructure it needs to stay competitive” and deliver vital economic growth.

CEO Thomas Woldbye praised the performance of the airport, noting that months of preparation ensured millions of passengers:

He also said Heathrow intends to “go further” by expanding its route network and passenger offering, emphasising that growth is key to ensuring the UK remains home to Europe’s leading hub.
