Lufthansa Group has approved an order for 20 additional long-haul aircraft, split evenly between Airbus and Boeing, as the airline group continues its large-scale fleet modernisation programme.

A350s and 787s continue fleet renewal

The order includes 10 Airbus A350-900 aircraft and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with deliveries scheduled between 2032 and 2034. The move forms part of Lufthansa Group’s strategy to improve operational efficiency, reduce emissions, and standardise its long-haul fleet.

According to the airline group, the latest-generation aircraft will support premium cabin upgrades while lowering fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr described the investment as a “clear commitment to a modern fleet, to premium quality, and to further reducing CO₂ emissions.”

The new order strengthens Lufthansa Group’s existing commitments to both Airbus and Boeing widebody programmes. The group already has outstanding orders for Airbus A350-1000s, Boeing 777-9s, and additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

As of April 2026, Lufthansa Group still had 21 Airbus A350-900s awaiting delivery from a previous order, alongside 15 Airbus A350-1000s. On the Boeing side, the group also has 23 Boeing 787-9s and 20 Boeing 777-9 aircraft yet to be delivered.

The airline group has increasingly shifted towards twin-engine widebody aircraft as it retires older four-engine jets, including the Airbus A340 series and Boeing 747-400 fleet. Lufthansa says newer aircraft are up to 30% more fuel-efficient than predecessor models.

Long-haul demand drives investment

The announcement comes amid continued strong demand for long-haul travel and growing competition among major global carriers investing in next-generation aircraft.

Lufthansa Group currently has more than 230 aircraft on order across its airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Discover Airlines. The company says fleet renewal remains one of its key tools for improving sustainability and passenger experience.
