VietJetAir has selected additional engines for their fleet of A321s. The announcement came on Feb. 4 from the Vietnamese airline based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, after striking a financial deal with Pratt & Whitney for a 12-year engine maintenance service agreement at this year’s Singapore Airshow.

Engine Specifics

Manufactured by the U.S.-based Pratt & Whitney as part of their EngineWise brand, the engines are to be delivered by July 2026 and are designed for Geared Turbofan (GTF) powered aircraft such as the A321s. The manufacturer adds that they can produce a 20% cut in fuel emissions.

Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, said in a statement:

“With this latest order, Vietjet will further realize the benefits of the most efficient engine for single-aisle aircraft and our ongoing commitment to enabling their network expansion.”

VietJetAir managing director Nguyen Thanh Son said:

“The GTF engine is powering our growth with industry-leading operating economics and fuel efficiency of up to 20%. We continue to trust in the long-term, comprehensive and responsible partnership with Pratt & Whitney.”

The deal with Pratt & Whitney is to provide support to VietJetAir as a way for them to improve economic and environmental expansion.

Aircraft Delivery

VietJetAir gained its first A321-200NX in 2018 and is a slight variation of the A321-200N because of its cabin flex (ACF) system for reconfigured rear exit doors (now two instead of four) to reduce aircraft weight and increase seating capacity for up to 240 passengers.

The order by VietJetAir consists of 20 A321-200NY(XLR) aircraft and 24 A321-200NXs, bringing the quantity of A321s up to 44 aircraft.  This additional order gives them a grand total of 137 units from their personal fleet.
